Jena is taking a leading role in European photonics with the launch of the EU project PHORTIFY, starting September 2025. The initiative brings together the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Leibniz-IPHT, and Active Fiber Systems GmbH, alongside nine other top institutions across Europe. Coordinated by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, PHORTIFY aims to modernize photonics education and attract young talent to science and industry.
The project builds on Jena’s strong academic programs, such as those offered by the Abbe School of Photonics, and introduces flexible, hybrid learning formats and international exchange opportunities. It also connects education with real-world applications through industry collaboration.
Dr. Tino Eidam, CTO of Active Fiber Systems, highlights:
“Jena offers good conditions with many motivated graduates, yet a shortage of skilled workers, particularly in technical fields, is noticeable. That is why we are taking new approaches early on. With PHORTIFY, we support young talent, provide hands-on experience during their studies, and create real career prospects. This strengthens both research and industry while increasing Jena’s international visibility.”
